The Power Mac G4 was the machine the U.S. government briefly classified as a supercomputer — its AltiVec 'Velocity Engine' SIMD unit ran certain calculations at 1 GFLOP, the threshold for export-controlled computing hardware at the time. Apple used this fact in its advertising. In practice, it made the G4 the premier choice for digital video editing and 3D rendering throughout the early 2000s.
