The FDHD (SuperDrive) variant of the SE was the first Mac that could read — and write — both 1.44MB Mac disks and IBM-format DOS disks. At a time when Macs and PCs were increasingly expected to coexist in offices, this was practically significant. The same SuperDrive mechanism would persist in Apple hardware for another decade.
