Power Macintosh G5

Early 2005

Towers2005Common

The first 64-bit consumer computer, housed in a case so precisely engineered that the aluminum towers are still used as audiophile speaker enclosures today. The G5 ran so hot that high-end dual-processor configurations required liquid cooling — a rarity in desktop computers at the time. IBM's inability to produce a laptop-capable G5 chip drove Apple's historic switch to Intel processors in 2006.
