The PowerBook 165c was Apple's first color laptop — a passive-matrix color display that was dimmer and slower than the active-matrix screens on competing models, but dramatically cheaper. Color on a PowerBook was a statement of intent. The 165c proved the concept; the 540c's active-matrix Blackbird a year later proved it could be done properly.
